Diabetic Retinopathy Care

Screening and treatment for retinal damage caused by diabetes.

Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels of the retina. In its early stages diabetic retinopathy causes no symptoms, so annual screening is recommended for everyone living with diabetes. Screening uses dilated retinal photography, with optical coherence tomography where macular oedema is suspected. Findings are graded and shared with your diabetes team. Treatment may involve laser photocoagulation, intravitreal injections, or vitreoretinal surgery depending on the stage. Each carries its own risks, which your surgeon will set out alongside the expected benefit before you consent.
